LD Residential Care Practitioner

Location: Burton-on-Trent and Swadlincote

Salary: £12.80 or £13.35 per hour if qualified, £70 per sleep in

Job Purpose – Learning Disabilities Children’s Home

The primary purpose of this role is to provide high-quality care, guidance, and support to children and young people with learning disabilities, ensuring their safety, dignity, and wellbeing at all times. You will attend to their practical, physical, communication, and emotional needs, using a person-centred approach.

You will act as a positive role model, support young people to develop life skills, reduce anxieties, communicate effectively, and achieve the highest level of independence and personal development possible.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide care for children and young people by:

  • Supporting with daily living skills (e.g., cooking, cleaning, personal care) in a sensitive and dignity-preserving way
  • Building consistent, trusting, and nurturing relationships using communication methods appropriate to each child (e.g., visual aids, symbols, Makaton, PECS)
  • Meeting each child’s physical, sensory, emotional, behavioural, communication, cultural, and educational needs
  • Acting as a positive role model and promoting calm, safe, and socially appropriate behaviour
  • Supporting children to develop emotional regulation using strategies consistent with their behaviour support plans
  • Following each child’s care plan, behaviour support plan, communication plan, and adjusting support as their needs evolve
  • Creating a safe, predictable, and autism-friendly environment that reduces anxiety and supports routine

General Responsibilities

  • Driving company vehicles (subject to holding a valid licence and following procedures)
  • Participating in all mandatory training and maintaining an up-to-date training record (e.g., PBS, autism awareness, communication strategies, safeguarding)
  • Contributing to team consultations and professional development activities
  • Maintaining accurate financial records appropriate to the role
  • Ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of yourself, the children, and your colleagues in line with Health & Safety policies
  • Undertaking any other reasonable tasks required by the line manager to support the operation of the home
