Machine Shop Manager

Location: Cheddar

Salary: From £42,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Hours: Monday to Friday 8-5pm with 2 x 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch break.

The Role

To lead and oversee all operations within the machine shop, ensuring efficient workflow, adherence to production targets, and high standards of quality and safety. The role is predominantly desk-based but requires deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience in machining processes. The Machine Shop Manager will supervise and support machinists, liaise with other departments and customers, and be accountable for operational planning, team performance, and workshop output.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the machine shop team, ensuring all assigned work is completed on time and to the required standard.
  • Plan workflow and allocate tasks based on customer requirements and available resources.
  • Monitor progress and compliance with safety, quality, and procedural standards.
  • Provide technical support and training to machinists and engineering staff.
  • Review and approve job estimates and quotations in coordination with administrative staff.
  • Liaise with customers to understand requirements, ensure satisfaction, and deliver cost-effective solutions.
  • Conduct regular performance appraisals, manage staff discipline, timekeeping, and absence.
  • Maintain accurate job records, inspection reports, and documentation for each project.
  • Oversee stock control and coordination with stores for prompt supply and dispatch of materials and components.
  • Champion health and safety standards; ensure use of appropriate PPE and cleanliness in all work areas.
  • Manage workshop resources, including tools and equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Monitor budgets relating to labour, material, and spares to maintain cost-effective operation.
  • Generate operational reports and data as required by management.
  • Be available for overtime or call-out duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong background in machining or mechanical engineering, ideally within aerospace, automotive, or related industries.
  • Proven experience in a supervisory or managerial role in a manufacturing or engineering workshop.
  • Knowledge of machining processes, tools, and material requirements.
  • Familiarity with welding and balancing processes is advantageous.
  • Mechanical and electrical knowledge preferred.
  • Competent in planning, resource allocation, and problem-solving.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with a passion for team development.
  • High level of computer literacy (MS Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with customer interaction and job costing.
