Volunteer Development Officer

Location: Brecon

Salary: Grade 7 £33,366 - £35,235 pro rata

Hours: 29.6 hours per week

Contract: Fixed Term Contract(Maternity Cover)- 12 Months

National Parks were designated in order to protect beautiful areas for the benefit of the nation. They came about as a result of the 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, which put a legislative framework in place for the establishment of National Parks in England and Wales.

The Role

To manage and develop the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority’s Volunteers’ Service by:

  • being the first point of contact for members of the public, organisations, educational establishments and training providers looking for voluntary opportunities to volunteer or gain work experience with the Authority.
  • encouraging and developing a range of volunteering opportunities throughout the National Park working with other staff to develop a volunteer force that delivers appropriate skills in a wide range of roles across the Authority and offers volunteers a safe and worthwhile experience.
  • linking across the Authority to provide support for work programmes and projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring BBNPA’s volunteering processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection and induction of volunteers in line with the Authority’s equality policies.
  • Providing volunteer resources such as the BBNPA’s volunteer handbook, branded clothing, parking pass, etc.
  • Responsible for liaising with the Authority’s Health and Safety advisory group and implementing the Authority’s Health & Safety policies for all the National Park volunteers, including carrying out their Risk Assessments
  • Collaborating with BBNPA colleagues to coordinate corporate volunteer days.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate electronic records using their Volunteer Management System
  • Managing the volunteer development budget
  • Coordinating a programme of volunteer learning and training
  • Monitoring and evaluating the volunteer programme to inform future developments and evidence outcomes.
  • Produce a monthly volunteers’ newsletter using MailChimp and contribute to Authority publications and social media platforms.
  • Provide occasional talks, slide and film shows on the Volunteer Service – some weekend and/or evening working may be required.
  • Provide ongoing support and management of volunteers alongside Supervising Project Officers.
  • Work to ensure volunteer satisfaction, and seeking feedback from volunteers via regular check ins, surveys, and through chairing the quarterly BBNPA Volunteer Forum.
  • Working flexibly across the areas as required by the operational need and to carry out other duties commensurate to the nature and grade of the post as directed by the Chief Executive.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • A good working knowledge of protected landscapes and the work undertaken by National Parks
  • Knowledge of environmental issues and good environmental awareness
  • Experience of managing and coordinating volunteers and an appreciation of volunteer needs.
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety policies and codes if practice and their practical application to volunteers and volunteering
  • Experience leading and working alongside volunteers on a variety of activities
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills and an ability to write clear, concise reports
  • Good level of IT skills: competent using Microsoft Teams, Outlook, confident to learn to use various software packages such as MailChimp, Eventbrite and their volunteer management system.
  • First Aid qualification
  • Full driving licence
  • Welsh Language Level 0

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of voluntary conservation issues
  • Recognised qualification in countryside management, volunteer management, environmental management, training or adult learning.
  • Experience in managing complex projects or activities and adhering to deadlines
  • Experience of budget management
  • HML qualification / experience at leading guided walks.
  • Welsh Language: Level 1
