Fundraising Manager

Location: Ripon, HG4 1QT

Salary: £35,000 - £38,000 per annum

Vacancy Type: Full Time (35 hours per week)

The Cathedral has a history stretching back almost fourteen centuries. Throughout this time it has offered an unbroken tradition of witness to the Christian faith, both in the city of Ripon and across the region. Their aim is to inspire visitors as worshippers, pilgrims, heritage enthusiasts and tourists, to continue to grow the cathedral community and congregation and to serve those of all faiths and none.  First and foremost, the Cathedral is a busy place of mission and worship, but it also welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year, supports an excellent choir, provides a range of educational programmes and opportunities, works in partnership with local charities and partners to support the relief of need, social care and justice, and plays a key role as a major events venue and tourist attraction in the city.

The Role

The new role of Fundraising Manager is being established as part of the cathedral's ongoing work to implement its strategic plan, secure its financial future and support growth. The role will lead on fundraising for the cathedral, focussing on grant applications to trusts and foundations, growing legacies, major gifts and visitor donations, and leading and developing the existing Patrons programme. 

What you will deliver:

  • Creation and implemention of a Fundraising Strategy and a pipeline of applications which secures grant funding from trusts and foundations: Working collaboratively you will research and identify potential new funders, develop relationships with trusts and foundations, prepare compelling grant applications/cases for support and secure funding for priority projects.
  • An exemplary and growing Patrons programme: Working closely with existing Patrons you will ensure Patrons are connected to and involved in the life of the Cathedral, and develop and implement a Patrons development programme.
  • Increased visitor and individual donations: Through creative ways of telling the story, developing a compelling case for support and working to develop volunteer confidence, you will increase the average donation per visitor and grow individual donations.
  • Growth in legacy giving: Leading and introducing a new culture of legacy giving, you will develop and carry out effective strategies for engaging with legacy pledgers, support staff and volunteers to encourage legacy giving, and develop a pipeline.
  • Strong partnerships and great teamwork: You will develop and maintain positive relationships across the cathedral team, with funding bodies, Patrons, donors, supporters and volunteers.
  • Best practice in fundraising: You will ensure that all activity complies with the Code of Fundraising Practice, GDPR and other relevant legislation and best practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial responsibility: You will be responsible for achieving fundraising targets, monitoring and evaluating cathedral fundraising activities against agreed KPIs and for managing  operational budgets.
  • Line management: You will line manage a part-time Development Officer. You will also recruit and manage volunteers and contractors working on behalf of the Cathedral.
  • Scope: Your work will focus on fundraising at the Cathedral and will involve working across multiple staff and volunteer teams. The post will require flexible working and will involve regular evening and weekend work.
  • Partners: You will work closely with the Development Committee, external partners such as contractors/suppliers, church and tourism partners, and local and regional partners.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrable track record of developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies and achieving sustained financial growth
  • Relevant fundraising qualification or equivalent work experience
  • Experience of writing compelling and successful bids, and creating/leading fundraising campaigns
  • Experience of growing and leading donor support/Patrons programmes
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy for the work of the Cathedral, understanding of and enthusiasm for its overall mission and alignment with its values
  • Strong commercial acumen, experience of budget management and preparation of fundraising reports
  • Ability to work under pressure and deploy creative problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create empathy and trust, and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, staff, volunteers and donors/Patrons
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills and the ability to be a persuasive advocate for the work of the Cathedral 
  • A track record of effective management of staff, volunteers, contractors/suppliers.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use full Microsoft Office suite and CRM systems, a full driving licence and access to a car.
