The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the heart of historic Portsmouth.

The Role

We are looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic and caring Learning Support Assistant to work for 25 hours per week with an academically able pupil (in Year 12) who requires 1-1 support due to a visual impairment. The Learning Support Assistant will be responsible for ensuring that the pupil can safely access all aspects of school life and the academic curriculum. The post is offered for a fixed term of one academic year form 1st September 2025 to 31st August 2026. This is a term time only role, to include attendance at all Professional Development Days (INSET) in the school calendar. The hours of work will be Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 2.00pm, with an unpaid 30 minutes for lunch.  

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide 1-1 support to a named pupil when required during the school day
  • Ensure the pupil has safe access around the school during break and lunchtimes
  • Support the pupil in moving assistive equipment around the school site
  • Ensure all classroom resources are accessible
  • Support the pupil to be independent where possible, with due regard for safety
  • Contribute to reports and attend Annual Review meetings as directed by the Head of Learning Support
  • When not engaged in providing 1-1 support, assist with a range of duties as directed by the Head of Learning Support

The Ideal Candidate

  • Will hold Maths and English GCSE at Grade C or above (essential)
  • Will ideally hold a relevant qualification in full to at least NVQ Level 2 in Support Work in Schools or a related subject (desirable)
  • Previous experience of a similar role within a school setting (desirable)
  • Willingness to undertake all training considered necessary by the Head or Bursar, to include safeguarding training (essential)
  • Able to work with assistive equipment and learn new technologies as required (essential)
  • Able to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people (essential)
